Project Story
The Challenge
Residential kitchen and laundry service call at a University Park home. The client reported concerns with the garbage disposal wiring and requested a full correction of the electrical installation beneath the kitchen sink. Upon inspection, the existing setup included an unsecured junction box sitting on the cabinet floor, no GFCI protection on the disposal circuit, and improper wiring that did not meet current code requirements. Further diagnostics revealed a pre-existing open neutral and open ground condition on the circuit. Additional work included removal of window shutters above the kitchen sink, and a P-trap replacement in the laundry room.
The Solution
The junction box was relocated and secured to the underside of the countertop on the left interior wall of the cabinet. A new double-gang old-work box was installed on the right interior wall, housing a GFCI outlet and a dedicated disposal switch — bringing the circuit into full NEC compliance. Extensive troubleshooting was performed to identify and correct the pre-existing wiring fault causing the circuit breaker to trip immediately upon reset. Window shutters were carefully removed, requiring temporary faucet removal to access all mounting hardware. The laundry room P-trap was replaced and tested for leaks.
The Result
The client received a fully code-compliant disposal circuit with GFCI protection, clean and concealed wiring, and a proper switched outlet installation. The pre-existing electrical fault was identified and resolved. All plumbing was restored to proper working order and the kitchen window area was left clean and ready for finishing.
