An early-fall gutter check can reveal clogs, leaks, sagging sections, and poor downspout drainage before heavier DFW rain arrives.
Early fall is a useful time to look at how rainwater moves off your roof and away from your home. A gutter system can look fine from the yard while still holding leaves, leaking at a joint, pulling away from the fascia, or discharging water too close to the foundation.
For DFW homeowners, the timing matters. National Weather Service climate normals for Fort Worth show average precipitation rising from 2.70 inches in September to 4.60 inches in October. A short inspection before heavier fall rain can reveal small drainage problems before they become wet fascia, damaged trim, soil erosion, or water collecting near the house.
Start with a ground-level gutter inspection
You do not need to climb onto the roof to notice many warning signs. Walk around the home from the ground and look along each gutter run. Binoculars or a phone camera with zoom can help you inspect higher areas without using a ladder.
Look for:
gutters that sag or appear to pull away from the fascia;
sections that tilt away from the downspout;
loose, missing, or visibly damaged fasteners;
separated joints or open end caps;
rust, holes, staining, or peeling paint below the gutter;
plants or debris visible above the gutter edge;
splash marks on siding, brick, windows, or trim; and
dark or deteriorated fascia near corners and downspouts.
A gutter does not have to fall to be failing. A small change in pitch or a partially blocked outlet can cause water to stand in the trough or spill over during a hard rain.
Follow every downspout to its discharge point
The gutter collects roof runoff, but the downspout determines where that water ends up. Follow each downspout from the gutter to the ground and check the full path.
Confirm that:
connections are secure and not crushed or separated;
elbows are not packed with leaves or roofing granules;
water is directed away from the house rather than toward it;
extensions or splash blocks remain aligned;
the discharge point is not creating a washed-out channel; and
underground drain connections do not appear backed up or disconnected.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises keeping gutters and downspouts free of debris and leaks and directing downspouts away from the home. The goal is not simply to move water off the roof. It is to keep that water from concentrating beside the foundation, entering a crawlspace, or repeatedly soaking exterior finishes.
Watch the system during an ordinary rain
A dry-weather inspection shows physical damage, but a rain event shows how the system actually performs. Observe from a safe, covered location while the gutters are carrying water.
Pay attention to:
water flowing over the front or back edge;
dripping at seams, corners, or end caps;
little or no flow from a downspout;
water shooting from a disconnected elbow;
gutters that visibly hold water after the rain ends; and
puddles forming beside the foundation or against exterior walls.
Overflow at one point may indicate a local blockage, poor pitch, an undersized outlet, or a gutter section that has shifted. Water appearing behind the gutter may also involve the roof edge, drip edge, flashing, or fascia. Those conditions should be evaluated as an assembly rather than treated as a cleaning problem alone.
Check for related signs around the house
Rainwater problems often leave clues away from the gutter itself. Walk the exterior after the rain and look for soil erosion, mulch displaced from beds, splashback on walls, staining below roof edges, or water collecting where it should drain away.
Inside the home, pay attention to new staining near exterior walls or ceilings, damp or musty areas, peeling paint, swollen trim, or moisture in a crawlspace. These signs do not prove the gutter caused the problem, but they are useful evidence when tracing where water may be entering or accumulating.
The EPA emphasizes that moisture control begins with fixing leaks and directing water away from the structure. It also recommends cleaning and repairing roof gutters regularly as part of mold and moisture prevention.
Know when cleaning is not enough
Removing leaves and debris can restore flow, but cleaning will not correct damaged metal, failed joints, loose fascia, poor pitch, or an incorrect discharge path.
A repair may need to address:
loose hangers or fasteners;
separated seams and leaking corners;
damaged gutter or downspout sections;
deteriorated fascia or trim behind the gutter;
downspout extensions and drainage routing;
roof-edge or flashing conditions; or
grading and hardscape that direct water back toward the home.

The useful lesson is that drainage, trim, landscaping, and adjacent exterior components often affect one another. A durable repair should address the water path, not just the most visible symptom.
Keep gutter work within safe limits
Falls are a serious risk, and wet roofs, steep slopes, multi-story elevations, nearby power lines, unstable soil, and awkward ladder placement increase that risk. Homeowners can document visible concerns from the ground and clear safely accessible discharge areas, but should not climb onto a roof or attempt elevated repairs without the right equipment, conditions, and experience.
Stop and call for qualified help when:
the work requires roof access or a high ladder;
gutters are loose, sagging, or pulling on damaged fascia;
water appears to be entering behind the gutter;
the downspout connects to an underground drain that may be blocked;
runoff is affecting the foundation or neighboring property; or
interior moisture appears after rain.
A practical early-fall checklist
Before the next stretch of wet weather:
Inspect every gutter run from the ground.
Follow each downspout to its discharge point.
Photograph sagging, staining, separation, and erosion.
Observe the system during an ordinary rain when it is safe to do so.
Recheck the ground after the rain for ponding or washout.
Separate simple debris removal from repairs involving pitch, fascia, flashing, or drainage.
Arrange an evaluation before visible damage spreads.
