The Problem

Warning signs

  • Misalignment of the double doors at the center point (meeting stile), door slabs 'springing' or failing to stay closed without hardware, and inconsistent texture patterns where the new wall meets the old.

Our Diagnosis

The existing opening required structural preparation to accommodate a pre-hung double door unit, necessitating drywall modifications, texture matching, and custom trim work to ensure a seamless transition between the existing walls and the new frame.

Root cause

Standard open dining areas lack the privacy and acoustic separation required for a bedroom designation, necessitating the addition of a physical barrier and functional hardware.

How We Fixed It

  1. 1

Prepared the existing doorway for a 48"x80" pre-hung double door. 2. Installed Steves & Sons 6-panel hollow core double doors. 3. Applied drywall texture to the interior bedroom side to match existing finishes. 4. Installed casing/trim on both interior and exterior sides. 5. Drilled for and installed door knobs, strike plates, and astragal for proper closure. 6. Applied final primer and paint finish to doors, trim, and adjacent wall surfaces.

How to Prevent This

  • Ensure the header is perfectly level and side jambs are plumb to avoid uneven gaps between the doors. Always check lead times on specialty door sizes to prevent scheduling delays.

Materials Used

  • Steves & Sons 48-in x 80-in 6-Panel Hollow Core Pre-hung French Doors
  • Interior Door Hardware (Knobs and Strike Plates)

  • Drywall Joint Compound and Texture Spray
  • Interior Trim/Casing
  • Primer and Semi-gloss Paint
