The Problem
Warning signs
- Slow drainage in master bathroom, gurgling sounds in the toilet when other fixtures are used, or visible sewage backup at the exterior clean-out.
Our Diagnosis
Visual inspection of the rear clean-out revealed a large root penetrating a pipe joint. Further scoping showed the root mass extending past the foundation wall to the first interior elbow.
Root cause
Tree root intrusion into aged pipe joints, exacerbated by a large tree located near the sewer line path.
How We Fixed It

Removed and ground the stump of the interfering tree to prevent future growth. 2. Excavated the existing exterior clean-out. 3. Hydro-cleaned the pipe to remove existing root masses. 4. Installed Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining from the exterior access point to bridge the damaged joints under the foundation. 5. Installed a new 2-way PVC clean-out for future maintenance access.
How to Prevent This
- Avoid planting large-growth trees within 10 feet of sewer laterals and perform annual camera inspections if historical root issues exist.
