The Problem

Warning signs

  • Loose or 'floating' switches near HVAC units, outlets that do not provide power despite the breaker being on, and visible wire nuts or exposed copper in attics/garages.

Our Diagnosis

The garage GFCI was exhibiting an 'open hot' condition, indicating a failure in the internal circuitry or a loose upstream connection. The HVAC service switch was floating (not secured to framing), and approximately 10 junction boxes throughout the attic or crawlspace were missing covers, posing a fire and shock hazard.

Root cause

General wear and tear on the GFCI, poor previous installation practices regarding the HVAC disconnect, and incomplete finishing of previous electrical work leading to exposed splices.

How We Fixed It

  1. 1

Relocated the vanity light box 6 inches by extending the circuit and securing a new pancake or octagon box. Replaced the faulty GFCI in the garage and verified trip/reset functionality. Secured the air handler on/off switch to the 2x4 framing to meet code requirements for device stability. Installed blank covers on 10 open junction boxes and moved one exposed splice into a new, secured J-box. Installed a modern USB-A/C combo outlet in the laundry room.

How to Prevent This

  • Ensure all junction boxes remain accessible but covered. Periodically test GFCI outlets using the built-in test button to ensure the internal shut-off mechanism is still functional.

Materials Used

  • 15A GFCI Outlet
  • USB-A / USB-C Combination Receptacle
