Our Diagnosis
The existing shed wiring lacked a dedicated sub-panel and proper overcurrent protection, violating safety codes for outbuildings. Furthermore, the residence suffered from poor WiFi coverage due to a poorly located router and lacked hardwired data connectivity for stationary devices.
Root cause
Improper DIY or unqualified electrical additions to the outbuilding and aging, unmanaged low-voltage cabling in the attic.
How We Fixed It

Removed all non-compliant existing wiring and fittings to the shed. 2. Trench and install 1-inch Schedule 40 PVC conduit to NEC depth. 3. Pull 4-4-4-2 THWN-2 conductors from a new 60A double-pole breaker in the main panel. 4. Install a Square D QO 60A 4-space sub-panel with main breaker in the shed and drive a grounding rod. 5. Reroute low-voltage cabling to a central laundry location. 6. Pull and terminate new Cat6 ethernet lines and perform attic wire management.
How to Prevent This
- Ensure all detached structures have a local disconnect and a properly grounded sub-panel if multiple circuits are required. Avoid running interior-rated cable (NM-B) underground even if in conduit.
